One of my favourite workmates (Babz) quizzed me today as to what laptop she should get her 10 year old daughter as a Christmas present. After browsing through a few online and seeing the price tags I suggested that she got daughter a Barbie doll and a few goldfishes instead.
Aside from the fact that the iPod listening Xbox playing generation of kids are quite spoilt, I reached my conclusion just based on the fact that Babz already has got a laptop, and to pay £620 for a laptop that is primarily going to be used for surfing the net, chatting on MSN messenger and playing games on isn’t value for money. Yes I know the laptop will eventually be used for producing a Booker prize winning poem, working out the next prime number and for completing her PHD but that ain’t gonna happen until a few years time. Even though I made a logical case for why she shouldn’t buy her 10yo a laptop, I’ve got a feeling Babz is gonna ignore me and go ahead with the purchase tomorrow morning.
