A Mini Revolution

Juicelog Wed 170506: Melinda C-S (Human Rights Officer) who I met at Ibiza reminded us today being the second International Day Against Homophobia. Dan E. and myself went down to the Home Office (2 Marsham Street) this afternoon for the Defend Gay Asylum Seekers Protest. As the protest was about gays AND asylum seekers it sounded like the type of event that would have had the Daily Mail foaming at the mouth. On arrival we were slightly puzzled as to where the protest was taking place as we were expecting a sea of demonstrators chanting away. This is what we were greeted with……

Dan was too embarrassed to let me join them and dragged me to go outfit shopping instead.

Even a small protest means that something happened though. That's the important thing with campaigning - you need to string together events. Events are the stuff of politics.

I love these tiny protests. I've been on some very small ones. I don't think it's something to be ashamed of, it's more that we just don't do public demonstrations in this country. It's not a natural part of politics.

You are so right though - a banner makes it all come together. Everyone can stand behind a banner, and you become not just a group of random people but ... a protest!

Sorry I wasn't there, Juicy. I got your email, but I've been homebound with horrible mouth infection for over a week.

I actually wanted to join in but I could not overcome Dan's muscle mary grip. Next time I expect all of you non-attenders to be present with whistles, tannoys and A2 sized banners.
